Hello friend 🙋
This is the second part of my 3-part mini series on tech fear.
As you know, I’m sharing this because tech is such a gigantic part of our lives today – and for you as a business owner, tech can be a huge help in managing, streamlining and, not the least, growing your business!
But what if you, like me, suffer from tech fear?
In the first part, I talked about how tech fear affects me and how I’ve learnt to manage it. In this part, we’ll dive into the topic of doing it yourself or outsourcing!
Because there are pros and cons with both options. There really is no right or wrong here, you have to choose what’s best for you.
What I will say though is this:
Your choice will probably depend on who you are as a person, what kind of business needs you have right now and also how much time and money you have. 🤓
So, let’s look at those factors:
If you’re a person with tech fear, you might feel resistance to any kind of major tech project. This may affect your learning curve and it’s probably a fair guess that DIY:ing any such project may result in major frustrations.
On the other hand, you might also be a person who likes being in control and knowing how every bit of your business functions – a clear indication that DIY:ing might be the best option for you.
I personally am both. I have both tech fear and a huge need of control. So how do I choose between doing it myself or outsourcing?
This is where the other factors join the equation.
Let’s first look at business needs. If your business is moving along quite nicely and you’re happy with how things are going, you might not feel a huge need to take on new technology. But if you feel that there is room for improvement in marketing, productivity, reach and income, then taking on tech solutions that will help you with that will probably be a priority for you. Depending on the scope and level of those solutions, outsourcing may be an option.
Finally, there’s this question: do you have the time to learn and do it yourself – or do you have the money to outsource? Outsourcing will cost more in the moment. But DIY:ing will come at a higher opportunity cost – which is the cost of doing one thing instead of another (in this case giving up potential income from selling or creating a new offer while you’re learning to take on that new piece of technology).
Since I decided to go digital (at least in part), I’ve had to take on lots of new technology in my business. And because that decision was based on how I want to build my business going forward, there really was no doubt for me that yes, tech will become a huge part of my life – which means that I’ve had to learn lots.
The way I’ve done it is to DIY easier things and outsource bigger projects where I’ve felt like the learning curve was just too steep, would take too much time and cause too much frustration. I also generally prefer to focus on the things where I can create a unique value for my clients – and tech is definitely not part of that. 😜
So, what’s your take on this? Are you a happy DIY:er – or do you prefer to outsource? Or, are you like me, a little bit of both? Let me know!
Thanks so much for reading and stay tuned for the third and final part of this mini series on tech fear, which will be coming up soon!
Take care and see you soon!
Lots of love,
Sanna xo
