Business design is the expression of your strategy. It deals with the key aspects of your business, such as your target audience, the contents and structure of your offer, your different revenue streams, pricing and marketing.

When you make those strategic choices for your business, you want to keep in mind that they will impact your life too.

You can’t expect your business to fit perfectly with your life from day 1 – after all, it’s a lot about trial and error!

But what you can do is get clear on what you would like your life to look like – and then design your business with the aim to fit that.

To illustrate, here are a few ways in which your business design will have a tangible effect on your life:

Design aspect: You offer unlimited Whatsapp messages as part of your coaching packages.
Effect on life: Your clients will probably expect you to be present for them outside of work hours.

Design aspect: You have no passive revenue streams.
Effect: Your income is directly affected by the number of hours that you put in.

Design aspect: Your work requires you to be physically present in a specific location.
Effect: Your geographical freedom is limited.

Design aspect: Your target audience is in the lower segment of the market.
Effect: You need to price your offer lower and sell larger quantities/number of hours to make a profit.

The good news is, that if there’s a part of your business that you’re not happy with, you can always redesign! And when you do, you want to look at your life outside of it as the starting point, and how you define success. If geographical freedom is part of that, then build that into your business model.

Remember, it doesn’t have to be all or nothing: you can start with something small, and then expand with time.

What do you value the most about your life – and how do you define success?

With love,

PS. If you find it difficult to define your life and desired success in that way, you can start with some easy principles to go by. Like for example: “My free time is sacred”. “I set clear limits for my business hours”. “I keep my integrity visavi my clients”. “I am a role model for my clients and my family”. Then, look at those principles and start sketching out a design that is right for you.
